Fast sampling and response

Starmon tilt can record acceleration and tilt in burst mode at up to 100 Hz (100 measurements per second). Different sampling rates within a measuring period are possible. The temperature sensor has a fast response of 2 seconds.

Application

The Starmon tilt is applicable for both short and long-term research:

  • Movements of fishing gear like trawls and dredges during surveys
  • Orientation of underwater vehicles, AUV and ROV
  • Tilt changes of submersible acoustic receivers and and mooring lines due to changes in wind and waves
  • Analysing shape of geothermal wells or boreholes
  • Vibration of subsea cables, recording bursts of acceleration data

Robust and durable

Starmon tilt has a robust and non-corrosive housing that can withstand harsh conditions at great depths. A calibration certificate is delivered with each instrument.

Long life replaceable battery

Depending on interval setup, the battery can last over a decade. The software

does energy and memory calculations based on certain intervals and reports

battery life status upon connection with Starmon tilt.

3-D orientation view

The user can view a 3-D image of the logger in the application software,

showing the tilt angle at each data point. Automated animation playback of the

orientation changes can be activated.

Easy to attach to gear

For flexible mounting, Starmon TD has an attachment hole and two slots for strapping to moorings, nets or deployment lines. Holder brackets are available for attaching on flat surface.

Simple in Use, From Setup to Data Retrieval

The logger and the accompanying items are designed for ease of use throughout the research process, from setting up the recorder, attaching it, to retrieving and analysing the data. The logger is supported by the SeaStar software and a standard USB cable which have to be purchased with the first order.

Setting up the Logger

To launch the time depth recorder for measuring, the end cap of the housing is unscrewed and a USB cable connects directly from the recorder to a PC computer. In the SeaStar software, the user sets the start time, start date and sampling interval before starting the recorder in measurement mode. The logger synchronizes its internal clock with the date & time on the computer being used.

Memory and Battery Life Calculations

The software automatically calculates when memory fills based on certain interval settings, making it easier for the user to decide how to program the logger. Estimation on battery consumption during the time period is also calculated. It is also possible to have the software do memory and battery calculations for a specific measuring period.

Uploading the Data

After recovering the logger device, it is connected via the USB cable to the PC and the recorded data is uploaded to the software. The results are displayed both in graphic and tabular form and the data can be exported to other programs. The time series data shows each measurement with its own time stamp.

Low energy consumption

After data retrieval the logger can be restarted or put into sleep mode for later use. Battery life estimation is always reported upon connection with the logger. Due to the low energy consumption circuitry design the battery life is long, but the lifetime depends on usage and sampling interval used.
