Compact and durable

The robust time depth recorder Starmon TD is designed to withstand harsh conditions and long-term deployment subsea or in aquatic environments. It is durable with its robust and non-corrosive housing, 197mm x 40mm in dimensions. A calibration certificate is delivered with each instrument.


The Starmon TD is applicable for a wide array of research:

  • Oceanography and aquatic research – long term stationary monitoring or surveying
  • Fisheries research – attach the TDR to fishing gear, both for scientific and commercial use
  • Data collection on underwater vehicles, AUV, ROV, subsea cables and more
  • Geothermal wells or boreholes

Fast and accurate

The temperature sensor has a fast response of 2 seconds and the depth sensor has immediate response. Depth accuracy is +/-0.3% of full range and temperature accuracy is +/-0.025°C. Sampling intervals are user programmable and can be set down to 20 times per second.

Long life replaceable battery and large memory

The replaceable battery typically has a long life of over 10 years. Actual lifetime depends on sampling interval used and frequency of use. Memory size is 8.4 million recordings per sensor, total of 16.8 million recordings. Battery is replaceable.

Easy to attach to gear

For flexible mounting, Starmon TD has an attachment hole and two slots for strapping to moorings, nets or deployment lines.

Simple in Use, From Setup to Data Retrieval
The logger and the accompanying items are designed for ease of use throughout the research process, from setting up the recorder, attaching it, to retrieving and analysing the data. The logger is supported by the SeaStar software and a standard USB cable which have to be purchased with the first order.

Setting up the Logger
To launch the time depth recorder for measuring, the end cap of the housing is unscrewed and a USB cable connects directly from the recorder to a PC computer. In the SeaStar software, the user sets the start time, start date and sampling interval before starting the recorder in measurement mode. The logger synchronizes its internal clock with the date & time on the computer being used.

Memory and Battery Life Calculations
The software automatically calculates when memory fills based on certain interval settings, making it easier for the user to decide how to program the logger. Estimation on battery consumption during the time period is also calculated. It is also possible to have the software do memory and battery calculations for a specific measuring period.

Uploading the Data
After recovering the logger device, it is connected via the USB cable to the PC and the recorded data is uploaded to the software. The results are displayed both in graphic and tabular form and the data can be exported to other programs. The time series data shows each measurement with its own time stamp.

Low energy consumption
After data retrieval the logger can be restarted or put into sleep mode for later use. Battery life estimation is always reported upon connection with the logger. Due to the low energy consumption circuitry design the battery life is long, but the lifetime depends on usage and sampling interval used.
